United We Change the Conversation About Mental Health

Yet too many people are hesitant to talk about their mental health or seek help. Studies show that one in five adults experience mental illness, yet less than half receive the support they need. United Way works with partners across our community to help provide access to quality, affordable healthcare and ensure that our communities get the mental health resources they need.
Here are some mental health resources in Rutherford and Cannon counties:
- If you are experiencing a mental health or psychiatric emergency, please call the Statewide Crisis Line: 855-CRISIS-1 (855-274-7471)
- If you need a referral to substance use disorder treatment or other resources, call or text the TN REDLINE: 800-889-9789
- If you have issues accessing mental health or substance abuse services and it is not an emergency need, contact the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Office Helpline during normal business hours: (800) 560-5767 or click here for more information.
- Click here for substance use resources through We C.A.R.E. Rutherford.
- Text “TN” to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line and to immediately be connected to a trained crisis counselor 24/7.
- Mental Health America resources. (Includes some COVID-19 bonus materials.)
- STARS Enhanced Student Assistance Program (ESAP) is committed to supporting the well being of students and families throughout the Covid-19 national emergency and resultant school closures. Communication technology (audio and video) will be used to connect with students and families remotely during this period in which in-person meetings are not possible due to health risks
