Early literacy is an important steppingstone in a child’s development because if children “can read it, they can be it,” according to Trisha Murphy, the development director for Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Education.
Murphy understands why supporting programs like the Imagination Library is key from both her professional and personal life. She and her son, James, have participated in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and the Storybook Breakfast events for many years.
Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that delivers high quality, age-appropriate books for children from birth to five years old each month. Murphy said it was like receiving “little prizes each month.” Her son would call Dolly Parton “Aunt Dolly,” thinking they came from extended family.
Storybook Breakfast has taken place in Murfreesboro for six years. It gives children the chance to see their favorite storybook characters come to life, eat breakfast, and participate in a craft. The event brings community leaders and members together to celebrate and help fund the Imagination Library and early literacy programs.
For James, he has attended Storybook Breakfast since he was three years old. Now at age eight, he plans to volunteer at the event, continuing to make it special for other children.
The event will take place on March 1st at 8:30am at Overall Creek Elementary School. You can find more information through our website and purchase a ticket here.
